Just an FYI. The schools fire alarm system activated early this morning. The case was determined to be water in one of the gym's alarms due to the roof project. The fire department determined that we were safe to open today. The gym is not available for student use for the remainder of this week.
The Downsville Lion’s club will be coming to DCS to provide vision screenings in December. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Health Office.
Vision Screening Program, The Lions Clubs in New York State, have launched a special program to screen children for vision problems that can lead to Amblyopia, commonly referred to as “lazy eye.” The program focuses on screening children between the ages of 6 months and 6 years. The trained volunteers from your local Lions Club will screen the children’s eyes with either a Welch Allyn vision screener or a Plusoptix screener.
What we screen for: The Vision Screeners detect risk factors that may lead to Amblyopia including: Myopia - Nearsightedness Hyperopia - Farsightedness Anisometropia - Unequal refractive power Astigmatism - Irregular eye shape Media Opacity - cataract Strabismus - Eye misalignment The Vision Screeners are approximately 85 - 95% effective in detecting problems that may lead to amblyopia.

Oct. 21-25 is designated as National School Bus Safety Week!
SCHOOL BUS SAFETY TIPS 🚌
Talk bus safety with your kids. Teach them to “play it S.A.F.E.”:
🚍 Stay at least ten feet — five giant steps — away from the curb.
🚍 Always wait until the bus comes to a complete stop and the bus driver signals for you to board.
🚍 Face forward after finding a seat on the bus.
🚍 Exit the bus after it stops and look left-right-left for cars before crossing a street.
If you are driving, remember these simple rules:
🟡 Yellow flashing lights indicate the bus is preparing to stop to load or unload children. You should slow down and prepare to stop your vehicle.
🔴 Red flashing lights and extended stop arms indicate the bus has stopped and children are getting on or off. You must stop your car and wait until the red lights stop flashing, the extended stop-arm is withdrawn, and the bus begins moving, before you can start driving again.
⚠️ Even when lights aren’t flashing, watch for children, particularly in the morning or mid-afternoon, around school arrival and dismissal times. Be alert as you back out of a driveway, or drive through a neighborhood, school zone or bus stop.
Thank you to our DCSD bus drivers who keep students safe!

On Thursday, October 10th, DCS will hold its annual early release drill. Once again, it will be coupled with an evacuation drill. The details are as follows:
At 2:00 pm, students will evacuate the building and proceed to the bus loop for attendance.
After attendance is taken, students will move to the bus garage to shelter in place.
At 2:15, walkers may be picked up by parents/guardians at the front door of the bus garage. Mrs. Odell will be there with students to release them.
After all walkers have been dismissed, bus riding students along with self-transport students, will depart directly from the bus garage.
Students may return to campus for normal after school activities (sports practice). There will be no after school program on this day.
